Mushroom Farming

Mushroom Farming

The first thing most people think of when they hear the word oyster, is pearl. Well, that’s not the case for these thirteen women! These women all think of one thing: Mushrooms! These women have turned their budding interest in mushrooms into a full fledged passion. Now well into their micro enterprise, these women have been producing oyster mushrooms by the kilo for the local market.

Hanging in dark cold tunnels and rooms, the mushrooms sprout from plastic bags filled with hay from the local fields. With precision and care, the mushroom spawn carefully placed by the women slowly spread through the bags until small oyster mushrooms begin to bud. Although these women have been equipped with the capability to produce mushrooms during the cold season in the Terai, their business has been significantly limited due to lack of knowledge to produce in the offseason.  As opportunities come with knowledge, this program aims to provide these budding entrepreneurs with the skillset to increase their production and business throughout the year
